In 2008, as part of a permit appeal settlement prior to beginning operations at our Granite City, IL, facility, SunCoke Energy and U.S. Steel established a number of new environmental benchmarks and collectively contributed $5 million to create a trust fund for local area projects that promote environmental conservancy.
In 2010, SunCoke’s Middletown Coke Company in Middletown, Ohio, formed a community advisory panel (CAP) of local residents, business owners and company employees. The Middletown CAP meets throughout the year and, like the Haverhill CAP, serves as a forum for open dialogue about issues of mutual interest to the facility and community stakeholders, including the operations of our Middletown cokemaking plant. The Middletown CAP is managed by an independent third-party facilitator.
SunCoke CARES (Commitment And Responsibility for Enriching Society) is the philanthropic arm of SunCoke Energy, which is committed to supporting non-profit organizations through charitable contributions and volunteerism in the communities where we live and work.
We periodically review requests for support from organizations located near our cokemaking and logistics facilities and our corporate headquarters in Lisle, Ill. We consider volunteer projects and financial contributions that align with our Core Values of Stewardship, Innovation and Excellence:
