Katherine Gates was elected as SunCoke’s President and CEO effective May 15, 2024. Prior to that, she was elected as SunCoke's President, with general responsibility for management of SunCoke's operations, effective January 1, 2023, at which time she also was appointed as a Director on SunCoke's Board of Directors.
Ms. Gates joined SunCoke in February 2013, and has been a member of the senior leadership team since 2015, when she was appointed as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. She has held various positions of increasing responsibility since then, including as Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer, from 2019 to 2023. In addition, from October 2015 through June 2019, she served as a director of SunCoke Energy Partners GP LLC, the general partner of SunCoke Energy Partners, L.P., our former publicly traded master limited partnership subsidiary.
Prior to joining SunCoke, Ms. Gates practiced law for two decades. As a Partner at Beveridge & Diamond, P.C., she served on the firm’s Management Committee and co-chaired the civil litigation section of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group.
Mark Marinko was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer effective March 7, 2022.
Mark brings more than 30 years of professional experience, during which he has held various roles specializing in accounting, finance, and business systems.
From June 2014 until September 30, 2021, Mark was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, a major provider of dredging services in the United States. In this role, Mark was responsible for all accounting and financial aspects of the organization, including Public Company Financial Reporting, Investor Relations, Audit, Taxes, Financial Planning & Analysis, Treasury and Internal Controls.
Prior to joining Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, from 2004 through 2013, Marinko was President of the Consumer Services division at TransUnion, LLC, a global provider of information and decision-processing services.
Mark earned his Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.
Mike Hardesty joined SunCoke Energy, Inc. in 2011 as Senior Vice President, Sales and Commercial Operations, and has more than 30 years of experience in the mining industry.
Before joining SunCoke, Hardesty served as Senior Vice President for International Coal Group, Inc. (ICG), where he was responsible for leading the sales and marketing functions and was a key member of the executive management team.
Prior to ICG, Hardesty served as Vice President of Commercial Optimization at Arch Coal, where he developed and executed trade strategies, optimized production output and directed coal purchasing activities.
Hardesty received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Kentucky. He is a past board member and Secretary-Treasurer of the Putnam County Development Authority in West Virginia.
Dr. Quanci joined SunCoke Energy, Inc. in October, 2010, and was appointed to his current position as Vice President, Chief Technology Officer in May 2019.
Prior to joining SunCoke, Dr. Quanci was Director, Corporate Technology of Sunoco, Inc. (a leading transportation fuel provider with interests in logistics).
Dr. Quanci brings over 30 years of domestic and international experience in process research, development, plant optimization, manufacturing, rebuilding/turnarounds, and taking new technologies from ideation to full production.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Quanci has managed several major engineering and technology organizations both internal and external to the petroleum industry, including those of: Mobil Research, Mobil Oil, BP/Mobil, Exxon/Mobil, Rodel and Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials (now DuPont Electronic Materials).
Dr. Quanci holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University and is a registered Professional Engineer with over one hundred U.S. and international patents and patent applications.
